Anchor Brewing was founded in 1896 by German immigrant Gottlieb Brekle. From day one, the brewery is ‘quintessential San Franciscan’.
Over the years the brewery survives earthquakes, fires and Prohibition. It changes location and ownership many times until, in 1965, Fritz Maytag saves the brewery – and his favorite beer, Anchor Steam.
The brewery soon releases other ‘modern classics’ like Anchor Porter, Old Foghorn and Liberty Ale, now credited as the first modern IPA.
Anchor is the first micro brewery, or craft beer brewery, in America – craft before the phrase was coined. It is these days part of the Sapporo family of breweries.
