In viticulture the term sustainable is used often, but what does it really mean? Sustainable farmers look further than just the used chemicals and fertilizers are used in the vineyards. For them it is important to keep in mind the ecosystem, working conditions for the employees and what they can do in return for the community.
Sustainable farmers aim to produce less waste, limit the use of chemicals and improve the quality of the soil.
Wijntransport works with multiple producers that grow their crops sustainable. Wente Vineyards from California is one of those producers. Here we will define 5 parts of sustainable farming by Wente.
1. Focus on fitted farming
This is the way of farming in which the farmer uses modern technologies, such as GPS, sensors and computers on the agricultural machinery. With this technology measurements are taken continuously in the vineyards. This way the need of fertilizers and minerals can be monitored carefully and over fertilization can be prevented.
2. Prevent water wastage
Water is one of the most valuable goods on earth and can not be taken for granted. By using modern technology, the irrigation systems in the vineyards can work as efficient as possible. This way, a lot of water can be saved.
3. Optimizing the carbon content
Carbon is a natural element that is everywhere around us, even in the soil. Carbon is important for the quality and health of the soil and the roots of the vines. That is why it is so important to keep the carbon levels optimal.
Sustainable farmers choose not to plow the soil between the vines, so the structure of the soil is not disturbed. By planting local plants and grasses the natural carbon and nitrogen production is stimulated. Besides that, for fertilizing the soil they often choose to use their own compost to help develop the organic matter in the soil.
4. community involvement
Sustainable farmers care about more than just the vineyards and soil. They also value their contribution to the local community. Preferably the employees are locals and Wente adds to the local festivities. Wente has been a family company for 137 years and they are a part of the community.
5. Continuous improvement
The California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance dares Wente to keep improving sustainable Wine growing. Most sustainable companies are at the forefront of innovation and technological development. For example the technology to reduce the use of fertilizers and water and reduce waste, but also to work more efficient.
