The South African wine producer Stellenrust has received outstanding reviews for three of their wines in the latest edition of De Grote Hamersma. This prestigious guide, led by wine connoisseur Harold Hamersma, evaluated the wines from the Stellenbosch region, and the results are impressive.
Stellenrust Pinotage 'Corner Stone': A 9-
The Stellenrust Pinotage 'Corner Stone' was reviewed and received an excellent score of 9-. Hamersma described the wine as an exceptional Pinotage, standing out from the often unruly and sweet variants. Instead, he experienced a soft and cool character, with finely woven tannins and a rich array of red and black fruits, including plums and cherries, with a subtle hint of bitter chocolate. The characteristic smokiness of Pinotage is present, but according to Hamersma, it might as well be coming from the braai. A remarkable achievement for this wine, which will appeal to both enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.
Stellenrust Chenin Blanc: An 8.5
The Stellenrust Chenin Blanc received a solid score of 8.5. Hamersma praised this wine for its complexity and versatility. He described it as an accumulation of scents and flavors, ranging from ripe pear and honey to ginger, pineapple, almonds, with a touch of creaminess and spiciness. The subtle acidity added a refreshing dimension to the wine. Hamersma concluded that the wine offers little rest for the taste buds, but they certainly won’t be complaining.
Stellenrust Chenin Blanc ‘Barrel Fermented’: A 9
The biggest triumph came for the Stellenrust Chenin Blanc ‘Barrel Fermented’, which achieved an outstanding score of 9. Hamersma described this wine as a masterpiece of oak-fermented Chenin Blanc. He praised it as a "Delmonte adventure" with notes of yellow and exotic fruits, spun sugar, nougat, caramel, and even popcorn. Despite the rich and pronounced flavors, the wine maintained a delicate balance due to the presence of soft acidity, resulting in an elegant and refined experience.
