Julien Schaal & Vins Biecher
Julien Schaal is
a true entrepreneur. In October he makes Riesling in France and in February /
March he makes wine in South Africa. He learned the intricacies of the South
African terroir from the Newton Johnson's and Paul Cluver. His wines are
beautifully pure and have a French elegance to them.
At the foot of the Vosges hills, just below the castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg, Julien Schaal's wine cellar is located in the village of Saint-Hippolyte. In 2011 Julien Schaal and Oliver Biecher, from Vins Biecher, started the vineyard. Alsace has a special combination of different soil types. The Kastelberg is a unique vineyard in Alsace with a slate soil. This substrate also consists of granite and quartz, which results in a stony and well-drained soil. The Kastelberg extends over steep slopes with an exhibition on the south side. Perfect for the production of high quality Rieslings.
We have 1 Grand Cru Riesling in our range so far:
- Julien Schaal Riesling Grand Cru Riesling Kastelberg
Julien Schaal is also one of the best winemakers in South Africa at the moment. It is special that a winemaker of his caliber is also the brain behind these entry level wines from South Africa.
