Tradition meets modernity: One can visit the historic Mauritiushof located at the heart of Spitz with its 800-year history and only a few minutes away the kalmuck cellar with its state-of-the-art technology: working at the winery Gritsch is also a commute between these two worlds. Franz-Josef Gritsch already embodies the seventh generation of the family, which is engaged in winegrowing in Spitz an der Donau. It goes without saying that tradition, old values and handed-down knowledge play a major role here. But it is also clear that tradition alone cannot create the top quality of today. That is why everything is always in motion at winery Gritsch. Last year, the 13th century vaulted cellar of the old Mauritiushof was converted and renovated into a classic and spotlessly clean vinotheque cellar. Franz-Josef Gritsch has also re-cultivated countless stone terraces in recent years and planted them with vines. Terroir is more than a word for him. It is the harmonious symbiosis between humankind and nature, experience and a look into the future.
As a convinced Wachau winegrower, Franz-Josef Gritsch sees it as his duty and task to care for and preserve the Wachau. As much as he loves his homeland and appreciates its wine tradition, he is also determined to break new ground. This gave rise to the idea of providing a wine with the original kalmuck label. The wine, grown on various stone terraces from Loiben to Spitz, combines innovation and tradition. Today, the fashionable kalmuck pattern can be found on the most diverse accessories. Thus, Wachau tradition has been successfully revived, strengthened and interpreted in a contemporary way. With every bottle of kalmuck® the Wachau idea is passed on. kalmuck wines® are considered ambassadors for Wachau wine quality and culture.
